NW Bergen History Day: Traveling the Highways and Byways Wagons, Carriages, Bicycles, Trains, and Automobiles
With just a few weeks to go I need to ask more seriously if you can help us out with staffing the tower for this event. This is a big deal with over 100 visitors expected during the day and a chance to get a financial contribution for the effort. The Northwest Bergen History Coalition is operating a tour of about 15 historical sites in Bergen County.
The tour is from 10AM to 4 PM and if we can get a few folks to take an hour or 2 it will not be a big burden for anyone. So far I have only one definite committed person. If you know other railfans who can help us please invite them to contact me.
We will have some material to hand out and brief notes to help you explain the details of the building in the event you are not already well acquainted with them.
The Morristown and Erie Railway: 1952 – 1982
Presented by: Rudy Garbely
Thursday, May 14, 2015 Monthly Meeting
At the Bickford Theater of the Morris Museum 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ 07960
The May 14th meeting will feature Rudy Garbely, Tri-State’s newest Director. Rudy’s presentation kicks off the release of his latest book “Morristown & Erie, Vol. 2 – Service Is Our Business, 1952-1982”. The Morristown & Erie is a local 120-year-old New Jersey short-line that has always been a fan favorite. With Alco Century diesels still plying its rails today, the railroad has a long history and a unique charm. Prior to the M&E acquiring their familiar red Alco Centuries, the railroad dieselized in 1952 with first-generation Alco switchers.
Rudy’s presentation explores the early diesel era of the railroad from 1952 through 1982. Topics will include M&E motive power, daily operations, the Morris County Central’s excursion trains in Whippany, and the railroad’s forays into locomotive rebuilding. The presentation will be comprised entirely of photos that are NOT in the book. This will be a rare opportunity to see these photos.
Rudy holds a degree in American history from Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA. He is employed by the Morristown & Erie Railway, and handles marketing and public relations. He also handles the planning, logistics, and marketing for the M&E’s passenger excursions. Rudy is an accomplished author and publisher, and owns The Garbely Publishing Company, which focuses on professional railroad history books written by Rudy and other authors. He is involved in our website and with the restoration of CNJ boxcar 24165. Orders for the book will be taken during the evening.
