URHS has listed for sale three of its "Green Fleet," otherwise known as “Jersey Builder,” coaches.
These cars are three of a large number that were purchased by the Central Railroad of New Jersey from Great Northern in the 70s. They were formerly long-distance coaches which CNJ purchased to supplement its aging commuter fleet. The original seats in these cars were removed and replaced with standard walkover commuter seats. Many of these cars were put into service on the CNJ with the paint schemes they arrived in. That included the original Empire Builder scheme, earning them the nickname “Jersey Builders.”
In particular, URHS is listing for sale Nos. 326, 327, and 333. Nos. 326 and 327 were built for service on the GN's Empire Builder, and 333 was built for the Union Pacific as a long-distance coach and was subsequently sold to GN.
These cars were inherited by NJ Transit and gifted to URHS, along with 5 others, in the 1990s. Given that these cars and not core to our collection, URHS decided to sell them in support of other artifacts that need our attention. These are still important to NJ's railroad history however, so we will continue to preserve several here in NJ as part of our large fleet of passenger equipment.
These cars are listed through Ozark Mountain Railcar. Inquires can be made through their site. Click the links below to learn more!
